Ingredients
  

Batter

  • 1/2 cup butter unsalted, melted and cooled
  • 1 cup sugar white
  • 2 eggs large
  • 4 tablespoons blood orange zest
  • 1/2 cup fresh blood orange juice
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • blood orange thinly sliced

Blood Orange Sweet Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 4 +/- tablespoons blood orange juice

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350° F.
  • Line a 9 X 5 X 3 inch loaf pan with parchment paper leaving excess over the edge of pan for lifting.
  • Sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, beat together the cooled melted butter, blood orange zest, and sugar on medium speed. Next, beat in the eggs one at a time. Then, stir in the orange juice with a large spoon until combined. A little at a time add in the dry ingredients until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  • Pour the Best Blood Orange Loaf Cake into the prepared loaf pan. Place the thinly sliced blood orange across the top of batter.
  • Bake for 45 minutes or until a knife comes out clean in the center.
  • Whisk together the powdered sugar, blood orange juice, and zest until well combined. Add more juice until the consistency is thick yet pourable.
  • Remove from the oven and cool for 10 minutes. Next, lift from the pan with the parchment wings and place on a pretty plate. Drizzle with the Sweet Blood Orange Glaze.

Notes

Store in an airtight container or covered in foil in the refrigerator for 5 days. It is delicious cold or warmed in the oven.
Substitute blood oranges with your favorite orange variety. Lemons and limes are a delicious spin.
